No Wonder I Sometimes Feel Insignificant

A friend sent me this clock in an email and as I watched it, I was mesmerized by the numbers.  With each tick of the clock, a child is born in China, a traffic accident happens, someone fills their car with gas, someone learns they have cancer, someone is sent to prison and many other life-movements continue to play out across the screen.  As the numbers  click off and daily activities continue to be tallied up, we can see mother earth in her beauty as it ever turns in its perpetual diurnal roll. Watching our planet spin from a distance it looks like humankind has made very little impact on it and yet watching the numbers ticking away tells us something different.

This clock is an awesome reminder of just how insignificant one individual person is in the universe, but humanity joined together as a force is powerful.  The earth, from a distance is a sparkling jewel but as I watched the clock hands continually tick away the time, my thoughts went from amazing planet to time bomb in the making. It seems that as our planet spins, time paces itself and beats steadily on as mankind’s actions continue to rush forward picking up speed with every stroke of the clock.

Benevolent and complacent, our planet waits patiently for its human population to recognize that we are rushing head-long into our own demise.  If we don’t solve our problems, she knows that the damage we do to ourselves and each other will lead to our ultimate extinction but she will continue her royal place in the universe with or without us.  And once we are gone, she will again give birth to a new and different species and hope that this new population will respect her wonders and treat her with the reverence she deserves.’; //leave this line
